n addition to the dedication of its members to work within the community, St. Stephen’s has its own strong outreach program. It has been the goal of the parish over the last decade to distribute 12% of our income to Addison County agencies and programs, although this figure has varied depending on income and budget. Funds are distributed as grants. Most of the money for outreach comes from the proceeds of Peasant Market. The remainder is included in the parish budget.
The Outreach Committee is also charged with hands-on communitywork. In recent years the Committee has either organized or provided volunteers for such projects as delivering Meals on Wheels, building ramps for elderly and disabled, working on Habitat for Humanity projects, organizing a Christmas Shop and preparing a holiday dinner for foster children, making lunches for a summer lunch program, and knitting mittens.
A pilot project in 2002 of purchasing, filling and distributing 175 backpacks to low-income area school children led to our creation and sponsorship of the Addison County Back-to-School Shop. This provides school supplies at minimal cost to children from low-income families and, supported by area schools, churches, and service organizations, now operates in three communities. We collect food for the local food shelf at both Sunday services and respond generously to national and international emergencies.
Community organizations, including AA, Girl Scouts, and Addison County Parent/Child Center, use church space for their meetings, usually free of charge. And the church also serves as headquarters to the staff of the annual Festival on-the-Green, the town’s week-long program of free entertainment for all ages the week after Peasant Market. The centrality of outreach to all we do at St. Stephen’s is unquestioned. The results of our parish survey indicate, however, that the focus of our efforts and the allocation of our funds need discus-sion and review. We look to our new rector for guidance and insight.
