News from the Pews!

In travel news, Ed and Mary McGuire and grandson Ryder Whiteman headed south and visited family in Pennsylvania and North Carolina for Independence Day/week fun.  The fourth of July found Linda and Paul Horn bicycling 32 miles of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail from St. Johnsbury to Danbury.  Suzanne and Steve Snider seem to constantly be on the move with visits to Ohio and Oklahoma where daughter Sarah is a zookeeper. 

Another set of travelers was Steve and Cathy Sontum.  They didn’t go far but are giving thanks for a wonderful staycation at Basin Harbor with their children and grandchildren.  Included were Matt, his wife Becky, their children Alice and Peter; and Megan, her husband Bob, and their children Parker, Dawson, and Graham.  After more than a year of COVID restrictions, they report  it was lovely to spend the better part of a week enjoying extended time together.  They even managed to capture a full family photo.

Steve and Cathy are also giving thanks that Megan, Bob, and their boys were not injured in a car accident that happened less than a week after their special time together.  Both cars were totaled but everyone involved walked away (actually Graham at 11 months isn't walking just yet! He was carried away.)  Thank God for airbags and car seats that worked as they were designed to work!  They are grateful beyond words and so are we!

Jacob Klemmer has returned to Montreal now that no quarantine is needed upon entering the country for Canadian citizens.  He will begin film studies at Concordia University in the fall and is working on the Fantasia International Film Festival this summer.

 We are happy to report Carol MIlkuhn is busy with Peasant Market this July. It comes at a good time for her because, sadly, she is moving to the Saratoga, NY area in the fall to be closer to family.  She hopes to maintain connection with St. Stephen’s though, so we will see her on  Zoom.  Carol says this is just one more of her five year plans and who knows what she will do after that!

 Congratulations goes to Middlebury College student Ben Beese.  The Scott Center (named after our own Charlie Scott) for Spiritual and Religious Life announced student leadership awards and an Interfaith Cooperation award went to Ben.  Quoting from their press release, “...for his ubiquitous presence among programs that encourage understanding and genuine engagement with those from other traditions.  He has been a model of respectful inquiry through his presence among nearly every interfaith initiative the Scott Center has hosted during his time at Middlebury. Ben also took on some special projects with the Center, researching and compiling a trove of resources and programs that support interfaith engagement at the college.” Ben was in town this summer studying German.

Congratulations also to Jane Reilly regarding her grandson Henry’s graduation from high school. He is headed to Northwestern in the fall.  Jane was able to be at the graduation in June.  She was pretty excited as it was her first trip to visit Ann Arbor, MI in a year and a half !

Another type of congratulations goes to Liz and Bo Cleveland.  Their daughter and her husband, Rachel and Justin Kaulius, are expecting daughter number two in mid-August.  Soon to be big sister, Lucy, recently turned two.

 Have you noticed how tan Annemarie Deering is?  She spends a lot of time cheering for her daughter Emma’s softball team. Emma’s team is the Saratoga Smash, a U14 team.  Emma plays in New York because  of the quality of the coaching available and there are more teams to compete against.  Emma played varsity softball at MUHS this past spring as a freshman.  Way to go Emma!  But wait, there is one more place we can all cheer Emma on!  She will be showing her Ayrshire fall calf at Addison County Fair and Field Days this August!

Happy Birthday to Asa Flagg-Davis!  He was born on Pie Da eight years ago.  I always thought we should call him “Sweetie Pie” but no one else did!  Mike and Beth Davis have visitors this summer.  Beth’s sister and her husband, Barb and John Stanton, are living in their “home” at 10 Acres Campground in Addison for the summer.

When asked for news, Barb Wood said, “I haven’t gone anywhere and I haven’t done anything.”  We can all probably relate.
