Our Worship Traditions

Most parishioners consider St. Stephen’s worship style somewhere between high and low church. Those who attend at 8 o’clock are devoted to this service for various reasons, including language and convenience, but have indicated that they are willing to incorporate some changes to the service.

Music plays an important role in our worship, about which more below. There is a Vermont informality in our dress and our propensity to break into applause in response to a piece of music or a joyous announcement.

Special Services

We are famous for our Christmas Eve Afternoon Pageant, a no-rehearsal cast of any children who wish to take part, which takes place before an SRO congregation of worshippers. Occasional Evensongs services are held during the year and this Advent we’ll be holding three Tuesday evening Taize services at 7:30 pm on December 5, 12, and 19.

Holy Week services, including our hosting Middlebury’s ecumenical Good Friday service, culminate in the Great Vigil of Easter.

We worship joyfully, intently, according to our tradition.
